Do smoke eaters really work?

Sort of a follow-up to my concept post.

We have three rooms: 20X20 w/ 10' ceilings, 20X50 w/ 15' ceilings, and 40x25 w/10' ceilings.

And my customers smoke. Alot. We put out 20 ashtrays and they are always full. Like packed full. Yes, we empty them periodically, but I'm saying there is alot of smoke in the air.

Obviously, this sinks into everything and really affects the food business.

So, will smoke eaters help?

A saleperson stopped by last year and said I would need 5 large units(drop into panels in our drop ceiling or wall-mount) at $3000 each. $15,000 to take away the smoke?

I have talked to lots of People that say Smoker Eaters really Dont work that well then they just have to be so massive I have a smoking section that was getting real bad so I just had them install a fan on the roof that takes out the smoke directly (kinda like a bathroom fan..and a lot less expensive)

Dear Joe: It sounds like you have more than a simple smoke issue - it sounds as if you have a ventilation problem. More than likely your building's ventilation was not designed with "recycling" in mind - however it should not be to difficult to upgrade. Contact a local HVAC company and have them come out and check your system , I'm certain that they could recommend an economical solution that could help a great deal. As far as "Unit Type" smoke filters , they do indeed work - but to handle to problem you described it may very well take 5 units ( which is big $$$$ ) - I think Jeff is on the right track by telling you to check into a makeup air .. good luck -H

Depending on the brand, they work great. We had them in 3 of our 12 dive bars and the customers loved that it was less smokey. Big D

They might, but (you wont lovem)when it goes down . It is all about circulation and ventilation. If You dont have the proper amount (and who does?). Then your looking at bandaiding a problem. (What happens when you expand?) More smoke eaters for everyone. Just think about it on your next restaraunt
