Weekly Beef Commentary
Boxed beef cutout values were generally steady on light to moderate demand and light offerings. Trade volumes didn’t pick up to any noticeable degree even after last week’s trade volumes reached record lows for a non-holiday week. Packers aimed to use this light trade activity to prop up prices for another week, but evidence of weakening prices showed up within individual cuts throughout the week, particularly in the loin complex. Ground beef was firm again this week, but some lower priced trades set to deliver post-Labor day holiday were noted. Beef trimmings were sharply higher with the exception of a lower priced packaged set for deferred delivery. Forward sales were moderate, with a notable consignment of Choice inside rounds as well as fresh and frozen trimmings. |
