Weekly Poultry Commentary

Whole broiler/fryer prices are steady in the East, steady to instances fully steady in the Midwest and steady to firm in the West. Offerings are light to moderate for current trade needs. Post-holiday demand is is seasonally light to moderate entering the weekend. Floor stocks are light to moderate, instances long. Market activity is moderate. In the parts structure, movement is light and selective with some dealers still down due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Prices are trending steady to higher for wings, mostly steady to firm, steady for the balance of items. Supplies of wings are light with good movement. Dark meat items, breast items and tenders are light to moderate. Market activity is slow to moderate. In production areas, live supplies are moderate; weights are mixed, but noted as desirable. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) for the week ending November 19, 2011 broiler egg sets were down 6%, and chick placements were down 8% when compared to a year ago. Based on the preliminary chick placements, the number of fryers available for marketing during the week ending 31-Dec-2011 is estimated at 139.9 million head, this compares to 138.2 million head a week earlier and 153.1 million head a year ago.
