Foodservice.com Launches eMarketplace

NEW YORK, NY - May 1, 2000 - Foodservice.com (www.foodservice.com), an online business-to-business community created for the $376 billion foodservice industry, today announced the launch of its eMarketplace, a business-to-business product sourcing and procurement service.

The eMarketplace features a comprehensive database of over 34,000 products utilizing a database standard endorsed by industry associations like IFDA (International Food Distributors Association) and IFMA (International Food Manufacturers Association). By providing access to the extensive product database through its foodservice community, Foodservice.com brings a one-source destination to operators where they can access information needed to make the right decisions at the time of procurement. Operators registered within the eMarketplace can also search on over 17,000 company listings and quickly send purchase requirements to multiple suppliers.

"We are very excited to be offering an unprecedented service like this to the foodservice industry", says Karin Wertheim, CEO of Foodservice.com. "By placing this extensive database of products at the fingertips of operators everywhere, they'll gain faster access to product information from both manufacturers and distributors than ever before. This allows operators to spend the time saved with what really counts - their own customers."

"By building the eMarketplace on top of an online community that has been thriving for years, we are bringing real, quantifiable benefits to the foodservice community", continues Wertheim. "We are serving today's needs by providing product information to the thousands of users who visit Foodservice.com every day. The eMarketplace is still in its embryonic stage - we realize that business-to-business e-commerce within a high-touch industry like foodservice is more evolutionary than revolutionary. The best is yet to come!"

The eMarketplace contains both branded product information from companies like Heinz®, Nabisco®, and General Mills®, as well as information on private label product from distributors like Sysco®, Alliant®, and US Foodservice®. The product database contains valuable marketing information on a vast array of products, including serving suggestions, nutritional information, ingredient statements, preparation and cooking instructions.

Foodservice.com Launches New Classifieds for its B2B Community

NEW YORK, NY - March 25, 2000 - Foodservice.com, the leading B2B community and eMarketplace in the foodservice industry, has introduced a new classified ad system to its suite of online services.

Just launched last week, the improved classified ad system is tightly integrated within the Foodservice.com online community, providing registered users with the ability to post ads, upload images, and gauge performance through a customized administration area. The classified ad system provides sellers with easy access to statistics on ad activity, displaying information about how many people are viewing and responding to advertisements at any given time.

"No longer is it necessary for companies with limited ad budgets to pay thousands of dollars in per-inch charges for what amounts to a small black and white ad placed in the back of a magazine", says David Smania, President and Co-founder of Foodservice.com. "Our classified ad system is simply a better alternative, not only in functionality and performance-measurement, but also from an eyeballs perspective. Through our large and popular foodservice community, we are able to bring more products before more buyers than any other medium in foodservice."

Foodservice.Com Selects Cohera's E-Catalog System for Key E-Business Infrastructure; Leading Virtual Community Serves Up Advanced Cataloging Solution for Food Service E-Market Hub

HAYWARD, Calif., Feb 17, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Cohera Corporation, the leading provider of e-catalogs for e-business, announced that Foodservice.com has selected the Cohera E-Catalog System(TM) to power the business-to-business e-market component of its virtual community for the food service industry.

Built on industry standards, Cohera's E-Catalog System is engineered from its foundations to grow as the e-business grows. Thus, Foodservice.com is assured that its investments in the Cohera solution are future-proof and will support catalog data aggregation for up to thousands of suppliers.

Foodservice.com will deploy the Cohera E-Catalog System to provide buyers with a seamless customer experience regardless of the type of relationship the company has with its suppliers. The ultimate goal for Cohera's E-Catalog System is delivering a one-stop e-marketplace. Foodservice.com supplier aggregation requirements include:

  • Integration of manually obtained data from its food service supply vendors into Foodservice.com's e-catalog in instances where that supplier does not have its product data available online
  • "Scraping" data from the static Web pages of those food service suppliers who have created their own online product catalogs
  • Allowing buyers to view information in the FoodSerivce.com e-catalog with up-to-the-minute accuracy by dynamically accessing its supplier's catalog information in response to a buyer's inquiry.
Supplier relationships for Foodservice.com will range from loosely coupled, where there is no direct dependency between the two entities, to tightly coupled, where product information and orders flow back and forth electronically as business is conducted. Cohera enables Foodservice.com to support this entire range of the e-market life cycle in a single e-catalog.

"Foodservice.com is dedicated to building a leading virtual community for the food service industry and a crucial part of that mission is creating the means by which our visitors can get a single view of commerce-significant data within this industry," said Karin Wertheim, CEO of Foodservice.com. "Cohera's forward thinking approach to solving the e-catalog problem presented us with the best technology available for helping us achieve this goal today, as well as evolving our catalog in the future."

"Foodservice.com's selection of the Cohera E-Catalog System demonstrates the tremendous promise that our solution holds for B2B e-markets," said Michael Laven, president and CEO of Cohera. "Only Cohera offers the versatility that Foodservice.com requires to handle multiple suppliers at varying stages of the e-business lifecycle. We are very pleased that Foodservice.com has selected Cohera's E-Catalog System as their catalog solution of choice."

About the Cohera E-Catalog System
Released in January 2000, the Cohera E-Catalog System uniquely aggregates and presents commerce-critical data from several sources within a single dynamic online "catalog" regardless of the original data's format, platform, location or ownership. Depending on the business relationship with a particular supplier, e-market makers can use the Cohera E-Catalog System to either "scrape" information from the supplier's public Web page or access that data directly from the supplier's source catalog. As the relationships with suppliers progress, the E-Catalog System provides users with a clear and evolutionary migration path at every step between a loosely coupled (scraping of static information) to tightly coupled (dynamic data retrieval) relationship.

Foodservice.com Completes Purchase of Foodservice.net

Addition of Domain Name Strengthens Existing Franchise

NEW YORK, NY - July 26, 1999 - Foodservice.com (www.foodservice.com), an online business-to-business community created for the $354 billion foodservice industry, today announced the acquisition of the Foodservice.net domain name. Already operating under the .com industry domain name, the addition of the .net extension allows the company to expand its already large reach within the foodservice industry. Since search engines continue to be the principal means of locating Web sites, adding what many regard as the second most important domain name extension, is a significant achievement for Foodservice.com.

"We are extremely pleased to have acquired this extremely valuable piece of Internet real estate for the foodservice industry," says Karin Wertheim, CEO of Foodservice.com. "The purchase of Foodservice.net permits us to rapidly increase exposure to our target audience of foodservice professionals, which has been recently estimated at 10 million people."

Since very few industry-specific domain names remain, it is not uncommon to have domain names being sold for tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. While it is indisputable that the .com extension is the most popular extension for companies doing business on the Internet, many also believe that the .net extension has become the second most desired address. To illustrate, when a user types "foodservice" into an Internet browser, the .com extension is automatically launched and, if it is unavailable, the .net address is used.

Foodservice.com Launches New Services For B2B Community

Employment Center and Auctions Online Strengthen Existing Offerings and Industry Related Content

NEW YORK, NY - June 23, 1999 - Foodservice.com (www.foodservice.com), an online business-to-business community created for the $354 billion foodservice industry, announced today the launch of an expanded line of services created exclusively for industry professionals.

Built as a site incorporating a wide range of services and information targeted directly towards foodservice professionals, Foodservice.com offers many convenient services similar to consumer-based Web sites like Yahoo!® , eBay™, and The Monster Board®. Foodservice.com, however, is unique in that it offers multiple services under one roof specifically tailored to the foodservice industry.

A new and improved job and résumé listing service, the Employment Center, provides a "locking resume" feature that offers job seekers the opportunity to remain anonymous while seeking employment. An executive chef, for example, can post a resume without revealing his or her identity. Resume access is then granted to the prospective employer by the job-seeker.

"The Employment Center does a fantastic job of bringing the interactive nature of the Internet to the foodservice industry," says Karin Wertheim, CEO of Foodservice.com. "What we have created is an avenue of communication for the nearly 12 million people employed in the foodservice industry, which had been previously unavailable for our niche market."

Another new service recently introduced at Foodservice.com is the Online Equipment and Supply Auction area, which brings the excitement of online auctions to the high-turnover foodservice arena. The Online Auction area allows end users, manufacturers, and resellers to sell used, surplus, new and overstocked inventory directly to the foodservice industry via the Internet. The Online Auction area contains a customer comment area and rating system where winning bidders can grade sellers on the service received. Bidders can also subscribe to certain categories for automatic e-mail notification when an item is placed for bid within a specific area of interest.

"These aren't Beanie Babies® or Pez® dispenser transactions", says David Smania, President of Foodservice.com. "We're dealing in ovens, walk-in freezers, and mixers. It truly is an auction site that the foodservice industry can call its own."
