Program Description

The American River College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management Program is the most respected culinary program in the area. Working closely with the Capital Chef's Association, the local chapter of the American Culinary Federation, local Chefs and Restaurateurs, the program prepares students to work in professional upscale restaurants. The program focuses on necessary job skills, and proper culinary techniques, teaching both modern and traditional approaches to cooking, as well as integrating modern management, sales and cost control techniques. The capstone classes allow students to run a fine dining restaurant while rotating through all positions in both the front and back of the house.

School Description

American River College is a California State public learning institution dedicated to quality learning that transforms and enriches people's lives. Located in the state capitol, the college offers an exception value both in cost of living within the state of California, and in tuition costs. The Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management Program offers both certificates and an AA degree that can be completed in 1 to 2 years. As a community college with open enrollment students can work at their own pace, or take only a single class if they like. The program works closely with industry, allowing the best chefs in the area to teach on a part time basis. The student run restaurant is among the best restaurants in the area, with the Sacramento Bee calling it "the best kept secret in Sacramento." Students leave the program confident in the skills they have aquired and prepared to make a name for themselves in the culinary world.
