Column Introduction
By Matthew Starobin
The level of technology acceptance in the industry has grown dramatically, but not as quickly as it has in other industries. The largest chains have led the technical parade. Why?
A number of reasons. First, they have dedicated manpower for identifying needs, evaluating products, integrating applications, training users, and implementing systems. Second, they have developed techniques for long range planning. Third, they can afford it!
But where does that leave everyone else? You know, the ones with too much on their plate, and limited cash flow and budgets? You know you need technology, but it's hard to make the commitment.
This column is for that group. My goal is to highlight the risks and rewards of hospitality technology, and to help you secure the best return for your hi-tech investments. It's not about bits and bytes, and I won't overwhelm you with techno-babble. I'm very familiar with your issues and concerns, and I'll do my best to help.
Issues could include integrating different parts, Y2K (better hurry up with this one!), "do-it-yourself vs. off the shelf", consultants or not, the Internet, future trends, or any other issues you feel are critical. The tone will be breezy but informational, and I'll utilize other resources when it helps us better understand problems and their solutions.
I look forward to the upcoming issues. See you soon!
Matthew
